What to do now, what to focus on next, and what can wait
— for puppies 5 months and younger
A clear, developmentally informed guide to early puppy priorities

Bringing a puppy home often comes with a long list of things you’re told you should be doing — training, socialization, routines, enrichment, exposure, manners — all at once.

The problem isn’t that these things aren’t important.
The problem is that not all of them are equally important at the same time.

For puppies five months and younger, timing matters. What you focus on now lays the foundation for everything that comes later. When priorities are unclear, puppy parents often feel overwhelmed, inconsistent, or unsure whether they’re doing too much — or not enough.

Puppy One is designed to give you clarity. This course helps you understand:
  • what your puppy must learn early
  • what you should be working on alongside that
  • and what can safely wait until your puppy is older

Instead of trying to do everything, you’ll learn how to focus on the right things at the right time — so your puppy’s early months support healthy development, confidence, and long-term behavior.

Puppies aren’t a recipe.

Priorities depend on the puppy in front of you.

Before I ever taught professionally, my own puppies were my teachers. Each one came with different strengths, challenges, and developmental needs — and none of them followed a universal script.

Over time, my experience expanded beyond my own dogs. While most people are only a handful of dogs “old,” my work has allowed me to observe hundreds of puppies, across different breeds, temperaments, and backgrounds. That perspective changes how you see puppies.

Puppies are not blank slates or lumps of clay to be molded into whatever we want. Their genetics and early development set a blueprint, and the breeder’s choices form an important foundation long before a puppy ever comes home. Even in early puppyhood, you can see who a puppy is — how they respond to novelty, how they regulate themselves, how they engage with the world.

Puppy One grew out of that experience. This course is designed to teach you how to read the puppy in front of you — to recognize individual needs, identify areas of strength or vulnerability, and tailor early learning accordingly. Rather than following a rigid checklist, you’ll learn how to prioritize what matters most for your puppy, so your training supports who they are, not who you wish they were.

What Will You Learn?
  • How to prevent common behavior and temperament issues before they become habits
  • How to teach bite inhibition (gentle jaws) in a developmentally appropriate way
  • How to create and use puppy confidence courses to identify strengths and areas that need support
  • Animal husbandry exercises so your puppy is safe and comfortable to handle
  • How to crate train for calm, relaxed confinement — without creating distress
  • Housetraining on the fast track, with clear structure and realistic expectations
  • Foundational skills that make sense for puppies:
    • Attention, sit, down, touch, follow, four on the floor, and early leash walking
  • Patience and impulse-control games that build self-regulation

Good puppy training starts with priorities, not pressure.

About Jennifer Skiba
"Teaching people to listen, one dog at a time is my calling in this life.”

Before I ever trained professionally, my first dogs were my teachers. Those early years shaped the foundation of the work I do today. Since then, I’ve spent more than 15 years building Namastay Training from the ground up and helping families create calmer, more connected relationships with their dogs. My teaching style is practical, clear, and rooted in understanding. I believe training works best when it strengthens the bond between people and their dogs — and that belief sits at the heart of everything I teach.

Trust me on this — this course will make your puppyhood easier.
Most puppy owners aren’t struggling because they’re doing things wrong.
They’re struggling because they’re trying to do too much, too soon, often based on advice that doesn’t take their puppy’s individual needs into account.

Puppy One is designed to help you slow down and get oriented.
You’ll learn how to recognize what actually matters for your puppy right now, what can wait, and where to put your energy so early training supports confidence rather than creating stress.

When you understand your puppy better, decisions get simpler.
You stop second-guessing yourself.
And puppyhood starts to feel more manageable — and more enjoyable.

Let my experience help you focus on the things that truly make a difference during these early months.
